What can we do in Indian democracy?

Aakash Bhatnagar

With the second wave of Corona, Indian healthcare system has been exposed with lack of infrastructure and lack of trained manpower to cater to the needs of the pandemic. Also, a lot of criticism has started in the country and across the world regarding the poor governance and lack of focus for updating health infrastructure in time.
There is heated discussion amongst citizens of the country regarding change of leader, leadership or governments. The people in discussion are those who have suffered or lost their loved ones, to those who lost their employment, to those who see news, to those who have affinity to the political parties and then there are those people who are working tirelessly to contribute to the well being of society and country where they live in but these are handful of people.
The problem here is that we are not a developed country unlike usually projected by our leaders, we do not have proper infrastructure to cater to the needs of our population. We are one of the largest consumer markets in the world due to a large population.
The question before us is how do we move from here?
How do we go about improving our political and administrative response system?
The country is marred with no. of issues like large population, unemployment, multi cultural diversity, abuse to women in the workplace, unorganized labour, poor healthcare and so forth.
How do we deal with these issues?
What can a common man do with his own set of problems?
Other than voting for a govt. once in 5 years, are the hands of the common man tied?
The answer lies in our behaviour we do on a day to day basis, how we react in our families, with our friends and socially.
We need to behave the same way politically; we cannot change our leaders or system we live in. We will have to deal with the same people over and over again.
What we need to do is give consistent feedback, follow and connect with leaders on social media pages, give feedback and reminders on a regular basis. If masses develop a habit of writing and expressing to leaders, it will help them rectify their biases and serve people better.
Let us take a lesson in this pandemic and understand that even with change in leadership, governments and leaders it won’t help much as everyone has their own set of biases.
What we need to improve is a consistent system of giving feedback, in a united manner for the well-being of society.
Let us take a step forward to harness the full power of democracy.
