Problems and Opportunities– Part 1

The present world is changing at an astonishingly rapid pace and we desperately try to keep pace with the changes. However, some of the established systems are not helping in any way. Both situations are unstable and can lead to a risk zone. When we are not able to catch up with the changes, we become outdated and are pushed out of our safe zone. The environment becomes highly competitive and most of the participants pull out of the game because they are not equipped properly to face the challenges.
An interesting phenomenon is that once we begin our career, be it a job, business or any other service, we all end in the same side of the playing field with very little financial freedom. The main reason is that as we grow, our responsibilities increase and we cannot think beyond our daily tasks. We end up sacrificing our dreams and life goals. The truth is that the comforts provided by the present occupation and the resultant earnings are, the very reason that prevents us from achieving financial independence. We are scared to change our orbit and get out of that comfort zone. What went wrong for us? Obviously, it was the start that we took which was not right. We started in the wrong direction and did not get the proper momentum to carry us through. Thus, we have failed to reach our destination; we were entitled to if we had utilized our true potential. The fact is that the choice we had made did not hold the promise of opportunities to utilize our potential. This results in a crisis like situation for the society.
Majority of the trained professionals (at tertiary level or even higher) are not getting proper jobs. Professionals are engaged in nonprofessional jobs, entrepreneurs’ success rate is very low and fundamental science has vanished from academics.
During interactions with university students, youth and entrepreneurs, most of the time it is experienced that the youth are always in search of a job as they either don’t get an opportunity to work beyond what they learnt during academics or because they don’t get a chance to experiment with their ideas. This situation turns the youth into job seekers. But many of them are serious about giving shape to their ideas and willing to convert the same into a product or a business which, if and when accomplished, will give them far greater opportunities. Once they come to know about the linear growth in job segment versus exponential growth in creativity, surely they will be willing to switch from job and their burning desires will help them to be an entrepreneur or a research or a design specialist. In this article, we will learn what major problems the youth are facing are and what opportunities they can create and lit a spark in this darkness.
1.1 Unemployed Graduates

Many researchers have come up with the finding that due to the present higher education system in India, most of the graduates are not getting jobs. The main reason behind the passed out graduates not getting placed is that they do not meet the skill requirements to serve the industries. In other words, they are not employable.
This is not less than a catastrophe and the reasons for this pathetic situation are:
• The student’s focus is limited to, scoring good marks.
• Most Academic Projects are ‘copy-paste’.
• Most of the students do not dare to do new experiments.
• Knowledge gained is not translated into skills.
It has been observed during various meetings with the students from different parts of the country that majority of the students do not have a clear vision about their future. They just need a job which can help them to survive. It happens because they do not get many opportunities to experiment with their ideas as they are not assessed for their ingenuity during their academics. This weakens their fundamentals as well as their career foundations.
This ultimately results in irreparable loss of great visions and huge potentials.
Our education system needs to undergo revolutionary changes so as to enable students to develop innovative skills and also lay the foundation for their career. If a student is creative and completes his/her academic projects with a mission to give a shape to his ideas or concept (which is the first step for a strong career foundation), then he/she may really achieve a lot, like publication of research papers, developing prototypes, understanding of market and even receive investors and industry responses in addition to the expertise in his subject. He may also achieve intellectual property rights like patents and copy rights. But a student with a ‘copy-paste’ philosophy misses out on all these. Young minds should choose projects for their academic curriculum in such a way that it should address one of the problems faced by the society. It should be in tune with their interest and skills so that it can further be converted into a future business opportunity.
1.2 The Right People in the Wrong Industry

Most students who pass out a degree sans a specific skill and a clear vision face rejection in the job market. Industries do not hire graduates with only theoretical knowledge. They don’t do anything new at experimental level during college and so cannot lead new projects or activities. After graduation, they are bound to join any industry to earn money to serve them. This is really a hard situation for them and after a few years in the wrong industry or domain most of them lose hope and direction and stick to the same job for the rest of their life. This is a bigger catastrophe because their true potential has been wasted without benefitting themselves or the society. Some simple steps, if taken sincerely during their initial phase of career, can help them achieve exponential growth instead of settling for a bored and uninteresting life. These steps can be:
• Develop sufficient skills needed to enter into the market or industry that will fulfill their dream goals.
• Dare to lead industry projects so that they can get real exposure to field reality at an early stage in their career. This will propel them to senior posts in the industries fast.
It has been observed during the past years that many of the professional graduates do not work in their core domain. It leads to the serious problem of shortage of experts at a higher level just because the right people have landed in the wrong industry…
